I'm happy to let others head for the airport in search of exotic climes, because I've discovered Beer, a beautiful, unspoilt fishing village in a sheltered cove a few miles from Sidmouth in Devon.

I spent a few weeks there over the summer and it was absolute bliss. Beer is the English seaside experience at its best. For a start, it's just a car drive away; it's warm and sunny (in summer at least); and I adore munching fish and chips on the stony beach or going for a dip.

I can't understand it when people say the water off Britain is too cold to swim in. The sea off Beer is just perfect, if you ask me, and I'll be heading back just as soon as the mercury rises again next year.
